Jericoacoara is located in the northeastern coast of Brazil, in the state of Ceará. The state capitol - Fortaleza - shall be your first goal on your way to Jericoacoara. A new, confortable airport has just been built in Fortaleza, turning the city into the main entry-gate of northeastern Brazil for international flights. New flights from all continents are being created every month. Currently, there are direct flights to Fortaleza from most european countries, as well as from Miami. If you are coming from somewhere else, most probably your flight into Brazil will arrive at Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. Some flights may also come thru Manaus or Recife. In any case, all those Brazilian cities have several daily flights to Fortaleza. A good resource for planning your trip is to check flight availability from your city to Fortaleza at travelweb. If you are already in Brazil, you shall have no difficulties in getting to Fortaleza.

If you are planning to travel with Brazil Air Pass, note that you must have a pass type I or III, because type II does not cover flights in the northeast of Brazil. Another option of getting to Fortaleza is by bus, specially if you already are in the northeast of Brazil. However, we do not recommend taking a bus from distant states, because the trip will be very long.

Jericoacoara is about 300 kilometres far from Fortaleza and nowadays there are no regular flights between both locations, so access is either by bus or car. If you are reading this information from Fortaleza, you can contact our local agent, for bus tickets, car rental and accomodations. If you are arriving from another city, and you want to go straight to Jericoacoara, you have three choices:

BY BUS: Bus transport is the most used way to get to Jericoacoara, since it is cheap and you don´t have to worry about the sand road on the last 20 kilometers of the trip: the bus company has 4WD vehicles that make the connection between Jijoca and Jericoacoara, all included in the price of the ticket (R$15). There are two daily schedules, 9:00am and 6:30pm. The night bus has also the option of boarding at the Beira Mar (Coastal) Avenue, one hour before. We strongly recommend the night bus, since the daily schedule stops much more, and since none offer air-conditioning, prepare yorself to get really hot under your collar around midday, if you take the daytime bus. If you are flying to Fortaleza, the bus terminal is not far from the airport, a taxi ride will cost you less then R$10. More info can be obtained at the bus company´s web page.

BY CAR: Driving to Jericoacoara can be more confortable then taking a bus, specially if you have a 4WD vehicle, because you will be able to drive the whole way. Some Car Rentals in Fortaleza offer Suzuki Jeeps, but only the bigger ones have offices at the airport. The road to Jericoacoara doesn´t have many signs to show the way, so a map is a must. The map below gives you all that you should pay attention to on the way, so print it if you are going by car.

. If you are not going on a 4WD vehicle, you will only reach Jijoca, where you will find cheap parking lots to leave your car. You have to hire a pick-up to take you to Jericoacoara (R$20), unless you arrive in Jijoca together with the buses (3:00pm or 1:30am), in order to hop on the company´s 4WD vehicles, for $2 each person. Two advices should be given here: if some driver tries to convince you that he can take your ordinary 2WD car to Jericoacoara, don´t go. The sand road is really bad, and the damage you can do to your car can be far more expensive than hiring a pick-up.

Also, the pick-up driver will probably try to convince you to choose a certain lodge. That is probably where you will get the worse deal, and he will get the better comission. Reservations are recommended, since there are few lodges in Jericoacoara, and the best places are normally booked in advance.

BY TAXI: If you are planning to stay long in Jericoacoara, and you don´t feel like going by bus, a taxi ride from Fortaleza can be a good choice, since a rented car doesn´t have much use once you are there, and after some days it can come out quite expensive. This is a good choice specially if you are travelling with more people to split the cab with you. On a taxi you also don´t have to worry about the way, since most taxi drivers know it. You have to negociate the price directly with the taxi driver. Normally they charge around $200, each leg to and from Jijoca.
